Oh gosh, good luck. I've been lucky(ish) in that my first roommate flaked out but I had enough to cover rent until the lease was out, and then my current roommate is someone I've known for years.
I guess just have 'first date' type things with potential roommates? Go meet at Starbucks first to see if you get a bad vibe etc. Maybe bring a small list of expected utilities, hard rules, and negotiable rules?
yeah, i've lived with all sorts of different roommates and had some close calls but i've never lived with a complete stranger yet! in college people moved all the time, so finding a replacement or a new place was never an issue.. now that i'm older my friends and i are noticeably moving a lot less, or they're living by themselves.
i'm definitely gonna do the coffee thing, thank you!
