if you're using a tablet, then i'd recommend practicing with that more over traditional art! looking at the screen instead of where you're drawing is a pain in the ass to learn (obviously not a problem with cintiqs, though)
anyway icon-tutorial (http://icon-tutorial.livejournal.com/) is meant more for, well, icons, but it helped me a lot figuring out blend modes/curves/levels/a lot of fun stuff that can definitely still help you when accent making!
artist-refs (http://artist-refs.tumblr.com/) on tumblr has a lot of pretty well-organized drawing/program tips, and will point you in the right direction if you can't find something
i'm no art expert but if you ever want help with figuring out photoshop (i use cs3 but a lot of things still function the same across versions, especially if you're drawing instead of photo editing) i can give you my id
