As someone who's both bought and sold fanfic commissions, yes, they are very lucrative especially if you write for popular fandoms, or find someone who's after an obscure one. My most recent trade was buying 1 word : 1 gem so you could potentially make bank on this.

I've been interested in doing this too and didn't think it would be allowed.

How do you go about offering fanfic? Average prices, is posting to AO3 fine

Also, it makes me curious if you could buy fanart using FR currency?

Basically just like any other Art selling thread. Have samples of what you've done, your cost, what you will and will not write, and it's helpful to have a list of your favorite fandoms, as well as ones you won't write for if that's a thing. I often use 1 word: 1g, but I've also seen (on other sites), $1 for 100 words or something similar. Delivery is either AO3 or Dropbox or Tumblr, although I know some artists will give the fic in private and tell the commissioner to credit them if they post it publicly.

sa, missed your last question. Yes, you can order fanart or fanfic with FR items or currencyiff you can find someone willing to make it for you. The only 'ban' on art purchases I can recall is the sale of FR originating items for Real Money

What kind of fic sells most, in your experience? I write fanfic and I was considering opening up a bio shop but fic! I could totally also write fic! But... I mostly write gen, small fandoms, and rarepairs, and am terrible at porn, so uh. I kind of assume that's a problem.

There's a wide market. If you're alright with writing NSFW/kinks, I don't suggest using FR as an advertising platform per se, but there's definitely a lot of people who'd be interested (and some would pay with RLC) for it.

For you though, since you mentioned stuff you write, rarepairs and small fandoms are definitely pretty good markets. Small fandoms you'd have to find the people to sell to, which is a pain, but definitely rarepairs. There is almost always a market for rarepair fluff fanfiction, depending on your fandoms.
