#47 - And now for something completely different (Part 2: Electric Boogaloo)

This is a Star Trek anon comm now. Make it so, nonnies.

Just kidding!
Since the attitude in the comm has chilled out a little, I'd like to try another post without a Wanker Thread to see how it goes. The Wanker Thread is still present on the comm, but hidden to you (for now) and will be brought back if any big drama occurs that people feel should be contained. You can still make complaints about things that annoy you on Flight Rising, but let's try and keep the vitriol at a minimum.

Oh, and welcome to
The 47 Society, AnonRising!

i always kind of find it funny how gain gets the occasional rag-on for same-facing, when most amateur artists could have the same kind of criticism. i just think it's more obvious with gain's art as it's more distinctive, compared to the quasi-anime look.

who the fuck doesn't sameface tbh.

Gain gets crit for it because their same-face is the same ugly, big-nosed, bee-sting lips face every time.

It's easier to ignore sameface when the face isn't hideous I guess.

It's not just amateur artists who suffer it though. Some professional artists do. Bleach is known for it.

I actually think their art style is rather nice looking. Just because it's not your taste does not mean you should call it ugly, that's horribly rude. There's good crit and bad crit, bad crits (of which are normally complaining or making fun of said art style or artist) NEVER help.

Seriously, having your art called ugly or hideous is a punch to the face and it hurts. If it's something you're proud of and you're unique style, what's wrong with it? Seriously? Stop bitching about how "ugly" it is and go drool at an art style that does suit your taste. Like they say, if you have nothing good to say, don't say it at all. This tears down artists, I've had issues with this myself. I love crits, but not when they're rude or make fun of my art. You can give advice and say something seems off, but you just don't say it's ugly or hideous...come on. If anyone was to say something you were proud of or is something that is unique to you was ugly, horrible, hideous or etc, it'd hurt and you wouldn't like it. I've gotten to the point where I ignore most, but I still get hurt by some at times.

But I do agree with the last bit, everyone deals with it. Amateur or professional, it's bound to happen.

Only thing I agree with is the sameface-ness of Gainstrive's art, when you see a post with a bunch of them together it's fairly obvious.

But changing that is something the artist has to decide for themselves. imo it's good to practice with face shapes and different body types so you can throw more variety into your work, but we only see the things Gain wants to show off, so who's to say there's not stuff they draw but decide not to share that's different?

Ayrt

Totally agree. It is great practice to play with other face shapes and body types, just because it can help expand your options I suppose (hope that makes sense). Now you don't want to sameface too much, as it can kinda get old. Just gotta find a happy balance with it all.

Exactly, for all we know they could draw totally different things too...but maybe this is just easier to draw and maybe it's easier on their schedule? I don't know them or how often they plan, but even so. I've known quite a few artists that sell art within a certain style and choose not to use any of the other ones they do. Just because it's easier and they can get orders done faster. Whether they're doing this or not, I don't know, , but it does happen.

Art and artists are interesting like that. But everyone is unique in their own way and that's totally cool :)

I don't mind anyone having a case of the sameface, the only problem I have with seeing their art around is that it's so incredibly fetishy looking. It's the kind of thing that just screams "I fap to this" and like, I'm glad you're enjoying yourself but I could really do without knowing that about a stranger. It's just awkward.

im pretty sure they keep all fetishy/porny art off of their main blogs, esp their fr blog.

It's funny because the only thing this means is that you're a pervert who is reading into things

Big noses and lips are kind of a race related thing so you may want to be careful with wording.

Gain's art doesn't look at all like any race on this planet.

If you're trying to suggest that their ugly faces do look like any particular race, you're the one being racist here, because that's some 1930's cartoon stereotyping you're doing right there.

I don't get how you don't get this in such an aggressive fashion. Let's say you (or the person who commented originally, if that's not you) really can't see gain's art looking human. Setting aside issues with that*, then instead of criticizing "big-nosed, bee-sting lips" why not be a little more careful with wording?* Saying something like "noses and lips that are so exaggerated as to be unrealistic" makes what you're going for more clear / might avoid the microagression that comes from sounding more like, regardless of whether or not you think it, that big noses and lips in general are "hideous".

* wtf. stylized art is stylized?
** seriously. that's all I was saying.

It's really skeeving me out that 'big noses/full lips' seem to be so offending to these people
