Assuming you're talking about that tundra: those are hard colors to make work together. and tundras don't have a lot of fans. (sure, people who are into first gens typically plan on breed-changing them, but you want something you'll like looking at in your clan until then. for ex, I'm more likely to buy fae first gens just because fuck it I like faes, they can stay faes for a while.) and the fact that it's been bred is definitely a turn-off for a lot of buyers, since part of the appeal of first gens is the 'clean' parents/offspring list.
so uh personally, I wouldn't pay anything for it. first gens are a big investment. if you plan on gening it up, it's like, hundreds of thousands of treasure, or thousands of gems. I'm not gonna do that for a dragon I'm only enh about.
I'm curious then, is it just the novelty of having an unbred dragon that gets people in a tizzy over first gens? I had assumed that it was just the fact that it wouldn't be related to any other dragon on site! But, if that were the case, wouldn't a dragon who had a hatchling that was exalted still be worth something, since it's still not related to anything on site?
Granted, in this case the fact that they're unnamed is certainly a bad mark, but if it were another dragon with "well-named" children?
Btw, I hope this doesn't sound like me haranguing you, I'm just curious about the first-gen mentality.
nah it's cool, those are all the questions of a sensible person
first gens are really just a self-imposed challenge for most collectors. it's a lot harder to fill your lair with nice first gen dragons. there's also an inherent customization appeal. if you see a gened first gen in my lair, you know that (okay with 99% likelihood) that I chose and paid for those genes myself. it makes the dragons feel more like they're "mine" and an expression of my tastes when I've invested so much in them. it's also just really satisfying to take a triple basic plentiful and turn it into something special.
and sure any sensible person would say "but why not just breed the dragon you want yourself or wait until it shows up on the AH, for like, a fraction of the price." but first gens are kind of their own separate game for rich players? like yeah I could pack my lair with super-pretty dragons from the AH in one afternoon, but there's no challenge to that, and none of those dragons would feel special. a first gen I've sunk a couple million into is special and mine.
I imagine it's something akin to spending months on a particular breeding project (which I've done far too many times...)? And I guess there's something pretty miraculous/amazing in hatching/finding a certain color scheme.
Thank you for answering my questions! I've been on fr for ages and there's still stuff I don't understand about individual play styles.
yeah, it's like that! breeding for a specific combo is also a big time and resource investment, and the dragon you get is special, even if later on it's something you could just buy on the AH. I'm never getting rid of the couple of dragons I got at the end of a long breeding project. =D
the first gen thing only really starts to make sense when you can afford it. like, first gens and first gen collectors made no sense to me either for the longest time. ....then I opened an accent shop and started making millions and millions of treasure a week and it was like, oh. now I get it.
It's a challenge. You don't have control over the colors like you would if you were breeding a project dragon, and you have to breed-change / gene / etc. them yourself.
