Aren't you describing reCAPTCHA? It's a free service that seems ready to use out of the box, so to speak. https://developers.google.com/recaptcha/ Or is there another reason it wouldn't work for FR?

Forgive my ignorance, but if reCAPTCHA works by analyzing mouse paths and click speed, why the heck isn't that something the coli does innately?

DA - Because it's a pain in the ass to write.

The APIs are there, that's fine. But doing the actual analysis and getting it to where it picks up humans and not bots is hard. There's math. (hell, there's probably an AI running it on the backend)

Why FR doesn't just toss reCAPTCHA in the coli...that I have no answers for. It would solve a lot of their problems. Might be technical reasons, difficulty in integrating it with the coli, etc. Or they thought rolling their own captcha would allow for better theming etc and just didn't bother thinking about all the reasons it's a bad idea.

it's probably this, prioritizing ~aesthetics~ over good gameplay/accessibility/etc. and then ignoring ensuing complaints about it has always been the FR admins' MO

This, they have always gone with "their image" of the site even if it's functionally worse.
