#47 - And now for something completely different (Part 2: Electric Boogaloo)

This is a Star Trek anon comm now. Make it so, nonnies.
Just kidding! Since the attitude in the comm has chilled out a little, I'd like to try another post without a Wanker Thread to see how it goes. The Wanker Thread is still present on the comm, but hidden to you (for now) and will be brought back if any big drama occurs that people feel should be contained. You can still make complaints about things that annoy you on Flight Rising, but let's try and keep the vitriol at a minimum.
Oh, and welcome to The 47 Society, AnonRising!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 04:14 am (UTC)(link)buddy. pal. friend. I've got logs documenting my hatchery sales from january 2016 to august 2016. my hatchery has been dying since new color hype died despite popular breeds like imps and coatls and despite always having new genes. I can't get customers despite how well my hatchery was doing, not even with new genes in good colors, despite advertising and pinging relevant association lists.
it's not "rose-colored glasses days" when my logs literally let me pinpoint the time when all of my sales flatlined despite massive price cuts

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:07 am (UTC)(link)Oh nevermind, while I was off trying to find a wiki link you entrenched your over-reaction on this topic hardcore.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:10 am (UTC)(link)Tho I just gotta say, talking all swagger about how the community will back your sales figures of how the market has tanked in 2016 is laughable for anything but G1s. We're usually talking about how much worse it was than 2014, that's why the Rose-Colored Shades joke on the site. Outside of the G1 Colorwheel Disaster, if anything I saw a bit of boost in 2016 from the new colors. Like Maize doubles and triples had gone pretty stale, but Cream ones sell damn nice.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:15 am (UTC)(link)Actual worst time I saw for sales: Spring 2015. That huge long gap in registration windows and desirable new genes. Sure, the amounts had been dropping for what you could get all along, but mostly if you adjusted for the number of dragons and players now breeding it made sense, but I swear to got the site damn near smothered in those months. I seriously think that two, three more months of that and the site would have just collapsed; they bailed out just in time.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:20 am (UTC)(link)Oh fuck those months. TBH I don't know if you're right or not from my own experience because I fucking left. I only came back when Baldwin's happened and it seemed like forward progress was being made again. Wasn't that when Piebald/Paint and Okapi launched?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:44 am (UTC)(link)I don't know what tone you were reading in my comment but frankly I'm boggled if you think this tepid response is a "hardcore overreaction"
if you were trying to find a wiki link for rose-colored glasses don't worry, they've been a concept for decades

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)Buddy. Pal. Friend. I have spreadsheets proving you overreacted going back to 2015, what about that?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)Have you considered you might be somewhat overinvested in being right about the sale-ability of pixel dragons and a small break might be in order?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)did I say something that made me come off as really rude or harsh or something? why is everyone assuming this? the dragon market isn't great, apparently that's a controversial statement or something now?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:55 am (UTC)(link)maybe it was the "buddy pal friend" but I really wasn't fond of the "you're looking through rose-colored glasses uwu" comment because it came off as condescending, as if I had no reason but nostalgia (for earlier this year) to back it up
if the "rose-colored glasses" was a very specific reference to the on-site item referencing imp prices then I didn't get that because it's a common enough phrase that the site item is not what pops into my mind

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)You know, this entire thread has gotten just so ridiculously angry (so pointlessly that I'm tempted to use a term from a different anonmeme of yor, 'angy') that I just don't know what the fuck, man.
For the record, yes the rose-tinted was a joke reference to the item on the website.
And I stand by that the dragon market has been 'fucked' so long it's pointless to act like it's that bad anymore. I joined in the summer '15 window, which I'm sure makes me a complete cheeping baby bird next to some people on there, but by the October/November/December windows of that year I was already telling my joining friends, "Just accept that you will be exalting pretty dragons, because there's too many users and dragons now for 'pretty' alone to sell. You need to either find the Hot New Thing or else have a niche."
I just don't think that's anywhere as bad a thing as people present it as. That's just how sites like this tend to work out.
And it's really surreal because this entire thread was indeed about how thanks to the Bogsneaks, even the Hot New Thing froze for a bit, because it suddenly stopped being the Hot New Thing.
For the record if anyone cares, now that Bogsnek mania has died a bit, Rune dragons are in fact selling again. I've sold three since I made this post at 150Kish each and made back my investment on the scrolls with some minor profit already and all future sales pure profit. That doesn't seem like a completely destroyed and broken market to me, I'm just positive that if the Bogsneaks had been released a week or two later, I could have sold those same dragons for 200-250k. I did it with Spinner and Skink, after all.
It's all down to expectations. And not making references to the website's alt text, I guess.

thanks for assuming I don't know what I'm saying or that I'm an idiot I guess

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:06 am (UTC)(link)TBH it's a weird topic to be this hard-line on even without it, like otheranon said it's all anecdata and your sales figures don't prove anything by themselves. But the Rose-Colored Shades, look them up.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 05:41 am (UTC)(link)erm. the concept of rose-colored glasses existed looooooooooooong before FR, and I know the concept of seeing life in pink is over a century old.
it's about viewing things as "the good old days" and usually seeing things as better than they actually were, like older folks looking back at the 1950's like "those were the days" and ignoring the racism and whatnot.
point is, I'm not looking at "the good old days" like it's something nice in my mind but not nice in reality, it's something I've recorded in my data. and something the community's been pointing out for a while.
it's not a personal attack, no, but I was rather miffed at the assumption that I pulled this out of my ass. there's more colors and more newbies hatching dragons, it makes complete sense that there's less demand for specific nice combos when there's a lot more nice combos to strive for and the market is oversaturated, plus the overstocking of genes when they first come out.
I feel old, you've really never heard this phrase before outside of FR?
(frozen comment) +1
(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 06:11 am (UTC)(link)I understood what you meant and how you mean't it to come across. I actually agree with you.
And seriously, if there's people that haven't heard that term outside of FR...dear lord. It's used everywhere and quite often
(frozen comment) ++1
(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 06:33 am (UTC)(link)Agreed, it's a pretty common term, and one I've heard thrown around recently even in international media...
(frozen comment) no subject
(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 06:29 am (UTC)(link)I agree with you too. Too many people hatching dragons, so many nice color and gene combinations, and a lack of lair space means if you don't have the latest genes, latest fad colors, or a niche breeding option, and/or you don't advertise the hell out of your dragons, dragons really just don't sell. At least for non-fodder prices. I generally exalt 90% of the dragons I breed now.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)Which aren't hot anymore because bogsneaks are now the hot new thing. And even when they are hot, there are a million color combinations so finding someone who wants what you're selling can be difficult. I can usually make one round of nests selling dragons with new genes well. Then they aren't hot anymore and don't sell for all of the reasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)LOLOLOL omg, I can't believe you've managed to sell so many people in this thread on me having never heard of them before. It's like none of you have the power to open the website yourselves.
Look bbs, when the item description contains a reference to people complaining about how good the dragon-selling market used to be, and someone brings it up in a thread discussing the dragon-selling market, I just might think they're making a reference. Without being some idiot who has never heard the term before. Seriously, open the gem market, read the tooltip, it's not hard.
(frozen comment) no subject
(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)"rose-colored glasses days" doesn't include the word "shades" like the item is called so how the hell are we supposed to assume? I thought they were talking about whatever I was looking at, which happened to be earlier this year. when you use a really common phrase like that, you need to be a lot more specific if you want it to be a reference, because that puts a whole new meaning on it. with the common phrase, that would've meant "you're looking at some time period through rose-colored glasses." with the reference, it means "you're looking at 2013-2014 imp market."
when someone uses a common phrase, my first instinct is to, you know, treat it like the common phrase that it is, not as a site item reference.
